Earth Day is supposed to be a day celebrating Mother Earth in all her bountiful glory. Yet with global warming, climate change, clean water, carbon footprints, skyrocketing gas prices and animal extinction all hot topics in the news, hasn’t every day become a veritable Earth Day?

Think about how many more news reports there are focusing on the impact humans have on the Earth. How many new products are there touting titles like “eco-friendly” or “organic”? How many more people are recycling or reducing their driving? To be honest, despite the media frenzy and consumer goods, I’m not sure whether that much has changed. Continue reading

Four people from Seattle and a Nigerian man accompanying them were detained for supposedly traveling illegally in southern Nigeria, according to officials.

Security forces that have been fighting militants in the Niger Delta have barred outsiders from going near the region, with the vast wetland region as a military zone.

The detainees were not been identified, but Nigerian Gen. Wuyep Rintip said the group was detained because they were disobeying the ban and would be flown back to the capital, Abuja. There, the group is to receive assistance from the U.S. consul. Continue reading

Bush Speech on Climate Change
President Bush changed his views on global warming, proposing the new yet vague target of stopping greenhouse gas emissions by 2025.

Among the other changes Bush called for include reducing emissions from electric power plants. “To reach our 2025 goal, we will need to more rapidly slow the growth of power sector greenhouse gas emissions so that they peak within 10 to 15 years and decline thereafter,” said Bush in his speech.
