The Effects of Global Warming on Wildlife

Effects of Global Warming

foxYou probably learned a little bit about global warming from Al Gore’s popular documentary An Inconvenient Truth. And even though some of the evidence presented in his power point presentation has since been discredited, it doesn’t really undermine the fact that we are, in fact, deeply enmeshed in a global warming situation.

It’s not that our planet’s atmosphere is becoming super-heated (as some infer from the term “global warming”). The truth is that the greenhouse gases we spew en masse into the atmosphere have begun to affect our weather patterns, making them more extreme.

So yes, there are going to be times when the temperature climbs higher. Summers may be hotter and last longer. But winter temperatures could also be lower than normal, and rain, snow, and other types of storms (hurricanes, tornadoes, blizzards, etc.), could be longer-lasting, more intense, and occur more frequently; that’s the real result of global warming. Biodiversity: Why Conserving Wildlife Is Important

Biodiversity and the Natural Environment
Biodiversity and the Natural EnvironmentBiodiversity is the different variety of living beings within an ecosystem or in our planet. It is a measurement on the health of ecosystems. Biodiversity also take part in the function of climate. In terrestrial habitats, tropical areas are rich in species whereas polar areas support lesser species. The conservation of biodiversity is inevitable for the survival of men.

Wildlife conservation is the preservation, protection, and restoration of the endangered species. Wildlife represents all the wild animals and birds living in their natural habitats. We have many rare animals, birds on earth. However, the pressure of increasing population has led to the extinction of them. Continue reading

Interesting Infographic on World Carbon Emissions

As we continue to take to the air in flight after flight, one has to wonder about the stresses placed on the environment in terms of increased carbon emissions. Climate changes due to greater carbon dioxide emissions from airplane exhausts are a reality of contemporary life, and one that is becoming increasingly problematic for the planet.

A company known as Fly(fly.co.uk): the Cheap Flights Search Engine has put together an infographic based on the World’s Carbon Dioxide emissions which can be seen in full here: World Carbon Dioxide Emissions Infographic.

What Is Global Warming?

A Brief Introduction to the Concept of Global Warming
Global Warming Causes and Effects
We all saw, “An Inconvenient Truth.” If you didn’t, then consider adding it to your list of to-do’s. You don’t have to agree with everything you hear or see in the film, but it does offer an excellent working definition of what exactly global warming is, and how it will potentially affect the oblique, planet we call home.

Here are the basics, a comprehensive introduction to Global Warming, what has and currently is causing it and the potential effects of these causes.

What Is Global Warming?

Essentially, the term global warming serves as its own definition. It is the increase in the Earth’s near surface and sea temperatures over the past recorded decades, and the projections of what the future will hold if such a warming trend continues. Continue reading

Global Dimming on NOVA: Dimming the Sun

“Dimming the Sun” Program Review: A NOVA Special

As many of you may well know, Nova documentaries on local PBS stations are extremely well-produced, often very insightful pieces on pressing issues that affect us all, whether political, environmental or otherwise. Several months ago, I caught a rebroadcast of “Dimming the Sun” and was again impressed by the program.NOVA: Dimming the Sun

Based on the discovery that the sunlight reaching our planet has been diminishing, “Global Dimming” is what scientists and researchers are calling the phenomenon that may in fact be “masking the full impact of global warming.” In a nutshell, as we reduce our levels of pollution, we may actually be increasing global warming, consequently heating our planet up to levels that may have catastrophic implications.

It seems that Global Dimming has even caused scientists to Continue reading

Lake Mead Goes Dry Within 13 Years

Will Lake Mead Evaporate By the Year 2021?
Lake Mead Water Levels Declining Dramatically
Researchers at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego have asserted that it is fifty per cent likely that Lake Mead will end up going completely dry within 13 years, or by the year 2021.

Lake Mead, which hedges the border between both Arizona and Nevada, was originally created with help from the Colorado River as well as the Hoover Dam. Tim Barnett and David Pierce, the researchers responsible for the study’s assertion, argue that the cause can be attributed to climate change and the increase in human demand for water.

Lake Mead, Lake Powell and Impending Doom

Between Lake Mead and Lake Powell (bordering both Arizona and Utah), aqueducts stem out and carry water from these systems to a variety of important and notable cities in the western United States and Southwestern communities. These include Los Angeles and Las Vegas, in addition to many others.

Further negative assertions from the recent study include Continue reading
