Microsoft ITPAC Green Data Center Selected by U.N.
On the heels of a major decision, it was learned today that the United Nations has selected Microsoft’s ITPAC data center for its new Nairobi office. ITPAC stands for IT pre-assembled components. The new technology has been shown to reduce all associated energy costs with data centers. The selection of Microsoft’s green data center will allow the United Nations Nairobi office to effectively run an energy neutral profile.
Microsoft’s ITPAC is a pre-fabricated technology center manufactured by Saiver, an air cooling company. ITPAC uses outside air to cool all of its temperature sensitive parts, thereby reducing the use of energy and power once necessary to keep data centers from over-heating. It has been shown that the act of keeping data centers cool actually results in half of a typical data center’s consumption of energy. Another great benefit of Microsoft’s green data center is its modular appeal. All of the system’s parts can be configured to spec, including servers. Further, the purchaser and user of the green data center does not need to construct a building out of materials like steel and concrete — ITPAC comes fully manufactured and pre-assembled already.
The Power Usage Effectiveness metric establishes a measurement for the energy efficiency of any data center (also known as PUE); the Environmental Protection Agency has noted that a PUE of 1 is excellent for data centers. Microsoft has stated that these green data centers have a PUE of between 1.05 and 1.15, registering fairly well on the PUE metric.
