Solar Panel Feed-In Tariff Cut in Half in United Kingdom

From the UK Guardian: Setting sun: solar panels feed-in tariff halved
Householders fuming as the ‘greenest-ever’ government kills off plans to install environmentally friendly energy and threatens a budding industry by Miles Brignall from November 11, 2011.

Solar Panel Feed in Tariffs in UK

Across the UK, many households are cringing over the newest press regarding solar panel installation — and anyone currently in the process of fitting their house with panels is getting ready to complete the process in a hurry, before they lose out on government-sponsored benefits. With just six weeks left to finish the installation of solar panels, those who don’t make the cutoff date will see any hope for extra income generated by energy produced from the solar panels, dashed, as the governments says that feed-in tariffs will be cut by as much as 50%.

With citizens in an uproar over the implied hypocrisy on the part of the self-proclaimed “greenest government ever,” the Tory-led coalition last week broke the bad news, much to the chagrin of the renewables sector. And the news? Only solar panel installations currently underway and completed by December 12, 2011, would get the full payment of funds, as initially promised. That means, many hundreds of people who had signed contracts in place to install solar panels will either have to effort towards expedited installation, or more likely, pull out of the entire process all together. And that means just about the worst possible news for the solar energy efforts in the UK. Continue reading

5 Important Things to Consider Before You Buy Solar Panels

When Are Solar Panels A Good Investment?

Solar Panels

Solar Panels

As energy prices climb and the threat of climate change looms, the appeal of renewable resources is rapidly transforming the market–and the way we produce energy. Until recently, energy generated from fossil fuels dominated the market. While it still accounts for the majority of U.S. energy production, renewable energy sources like solar, wind, and geothermal are growing increasingly popular.

Installing solar panels is one of the more practical ways of creating renewable energy on a residential scale. Solar panels can save you money in the long run and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. So when should you invest in a solar energy system? Here are 5 important things to consider before you buy solar panels: Continue reading

Solar panels have been thought by many to be an answer to looming energy crises in our future.  But how do they work? Solar panels collect and then subsequently convert solar energy into heat or electricity in a process that is complex but also sustainable.

The process allows solar energy to be converted from the sun’s heat and light shining onto solar panels, which is why they are typically placed on the roof of a house or business. The energy from the sun is converted into electricity, and that power, direct and free from the sun, brings the power that we need into our homes and factories to operate machines, electricity and more.

So what do we need to know about solar panel manufacturers then, when we’re out in the world looking for solar panels? Finding a good solar panel manufacturer and distributor with a solid reputation will inevitably lead you somewhere like Shine Solar’s website, and Oviera Solar S.R.L. Like many other solar panel manufacturers, their industrial operations are based in China, making their products affordable. But this company is based in Italy, where they are a market leading force in the solar panel industry. Continue reading

Konarka Silicon Solar Power Cells: Power Plastic

Problems in the Past With Solar Panels

Solar panels are a great way to reduce the amount of fossil fuels that are spent generating electricity, but they have always had some problems. The high cost of solar panels prevents many consumers and companies from purchasing them. There are also some difficulties with applications. Since silicon solar cells need to rest on hard, flat surfaces, they usually take up a fair amount of space and have to be situated in the right position to generate their maximum power potential.

Solar Lighting

Basics of Solar Lighting
Solar Lighting
Over the last century, many scientists and lay-people alike have helped to advance the cause of Solar Lighting, or harnessing the power of the sun’s energy to provide electricity, specifically to light and area such as a building or home. In the wake of electricity and the cheap cost to consumers for both lighting products and monthly energy bills, the lamps that light our homes have come to supply a greater amount of lighting than the sun, when it comes to the interiors of homes.

The next step was to then take the sunlight, convert its energy, and use that to supply lighting; this has been accomplished in a variety of ways, including reflective light-pipes, lens collectors and then later, fiber-optic bundles.

Now, Hybrid Solar Lighting manages to collect sunlight transfer it to buildings via optical fibers. Once inside the makeup of the building, the energy is then combined with electric light in already-developed light fixtures that are capable of blending the dual-power source. This newest phase of Solar Lighting evolution is currently being developed at the highest levels of Solar technology.
